Start with setting up the lights. You must have the recommended minimum 3 lights. The lights are first adjusted to the stands while making sure that the height of the stands is properly adjusted. In adjusting the lights one thing must be remember that you have to put the key light in front of the subject. Put a fill light on the side to save from the dark of subject. The fill light is directed to the subject but from the side. The fill light is set in such a way that it is placed in a relatively lower location as compare to the key light. After that if you have the hair light which is also called back lighting or rim lighting separates the background from the subject and helps bring it out. The background light is placed behind the subject and positioned in such a way that it shines to it to eliminate the unwanted shadows.
The key light, fill light and the background light forms the three-point lighting system. A fourth light can also be added behind your subject. This fourth light is called rim light and its main function is to add the halo effect. Once all the lights are in position, they are moved around while adjusted in different positions and distances from the subject to test which result produces the best photograph. Power should be properly adjusted while also placing the lights at different angles.
